RUMS Review: Vol. XII, Issue II

RUMS Review: Vol. XII, Issue II

We are excited to share the Summer 2025 online edition of the RUMS Review magazine, now available to read here.

A note from our Editor-in-Chief, Nilay Sah:

It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the second edition of the 2024/25 academic year! I’d like to begin by congratulating Harshitaa Sendhilkumar for her triumph at the National Student Publication Association Awards, winning best science piece for her article: ‘How Many Friends Can You Really Have? Rethinking Dunbar’s Number and the 150-Friend Limit to our Social Circles’. The category was hotly contested and judged by representatives of the Association of British Science Writers.

Anna Baker (Deputy Editor in Chief), Daniella Baruch and myself had the pleasure of representing the RUMS Review at the national awards and conference in Exeter. The sun shone on Devonshire’s fine coastline as we were treated to a weekend of keynote speeches, workshops and panel talks with internationally renowned journalists. The opportunity to network with like-minded writers from across the UK provided fresh ideas we look forward to incorporating in future issues. Amongst this myriad of student newspapers on show the RUMS Review truly dazzled. From our bold design under Amman Ahmed’s leadership, to world-beating medical journalism orchestrated by Elizabeth Kallumpuram, it’s no wonder our publication caught the attention of fellow student journalists and judges alike.

In this issue, both Adiyat Zahir and Saarah Chawdhury sensitively examine the heavily debated ‘Assisted Dying Bill’. Anna Zhang’s piece: ‘And with Mighty Wings Outspread: Louis Quail on Art, Activism, Mental Health and his Big Brother’, exquisitely explores a deeply personal account of schizophrenia through a uniquely creative lens. From Welsh coal and medical pluralism to ‘pink pilates princesses’ and homeopathy, this edition is set to be one of our most exciting and daring issues to date!

I’d like to sincerely thank my team for their sheer passion and brilliance in writing and designing this issue, our RUMS Review committee for their relentless hard work  and leadership, and finally our sponsors Elsevier, The MDU and UCL Medical School for providing the funding and resources to make this publication possible both in-print and online.

So, what are you waiting for? Sit back, get cosy and enjoy the latest issue of the RUMS Review. Enjoy the read!

Nilay Sah,

Editor in Chief
