RUMS Review: Vol. XII, Issue I

We are excited to share the January 2025 online edition of the RUMS Review magazine, now available to read here.
A note from our Editor-in-Chief, Nilay Sah:
Welcome to the first issue of the RUMS Review Magazine 2024/25! It’s my pleasure to lead the magazine for a second term, as Editor-in-Chief, with the magazine continuing to progress from strength to strength.
I’m thrilled to share with you that one of our writers, Zoya Gul, was successful in winning last year’s ‘Best Science or Tech Piece’ at the Student Publication Association’s National Awards 2024. Her piece entitled, ‘Trust me, I’m an Exorcist’, exploring secretive healing practices, was highly commended by a panel of judges from the Association of British Science Writers. This RUMS Review national success truly shines a spotlight on the excellence of all our journalists and designers, across the UCL Medical School community, contributing to the magazine.
Following the Labour Party’s landslide Summer 2024 election victory, all eyes are on the new government to deliver a promising long-term healthcare plan for an ailing NHS and Social Care system desperately in need of reform. Azsvin Mariathasan’s piece, ‘Taking Labour’s Dare – Darzi lays the State of the NHS bare!’, brilliantly dissects the challenges the healthcare system faces and underscores the importance of engaging with medical policy and politics.
Thought provoking highlights within this edition include: Hannah Labour’s feature on synaesthesia, ‘Can you taste a book by its cover?’, and Daniella Baruch’s new column, ‘Word of the Issue: Sonder’.
Our new committee has been integral in implementing some exciting new initiatives, including a monthly newsletter spearheaded by Anna Baker (Deputy Editor-in-Chief), a brand-new website featuring our latest articles, and the RUMS Review venturing into medical arts and poetry with the launch of our first ‘Zine’ — showcasing bold and original creative works from UCLMS students.
I’d like to sincerely thank my team for their sheer passion and brilliance in writing and designing this issue, our RUMS Review committee for their relentless hard work and leadership, and finally our sponsors Elsevier, The MDU and UCL Medical School for providing the funding and resources to make this publication possible both in-print and online.
So, sit back and indulge in the latest edition of the RUMS Review. Happy reading!
Nilay Sah,
Editor in Chief
